Cancer After Using Johnson & Johnson's Baby Powder?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral found in rock and soil. It can be lethal when it enters the human body, causing lung cancer, mesothelioma, stomach cancer and many other diseases.

Asbestos Linked to Baby Powder

Asbestos Linked to Baby Powder

Asbestos-based talcum powder has been linked to ovarian cancer in women.

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has a long history with Asbestos. The earliest reports of asbestos in J&J talc products date back to 1957-1958. Many victims have been exposed to asbestos through J&J baby powder.

  • J&J settled a case in California for $2 million in January 2020.

  • The company paid $9 million in February 2020 to an 82-year-old Florida woman who allegedly developed mesothelioma after using Johnson & Johnson talc products.

Key Johnson & Johnson Lawsuit Facts

  • On May 19, 2020, J&J announced it was stopping sales of its talc-based baby powder in the U.S. and Canada.

  • On June 23, 2020, a Missouri appeals court ordered J&J and a subsidiary to pay $2.1 billion to woman who allege that the company's talcum products caused their ovarian cancer.

  • J&J currently faces around 38,000 lawsuits filed alleging that its talc products have led to ovarian cancer.

Key Johnson & Johnson Lawsuit Facts

  • One of the largest payouts was in 2018, when a jury ordered the company to pay more than $4 billion to 22 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

J&J Ignored Positive Asbestos Tests For Decades

In 2019, J&J recalled 33,000 bottles of its talc-based baby powder from U.S. shelves after the FDA found asbestos in samples taken from a bottle purchased online.

Additionally, internal company records show J&J powders tested positive for asbestos at times between 1971 and the early 2000s.

J&J finally announced that they would stop selling talc-based products globally starting in 2023.

Johnson & Johnson continues to deny the allegations regarding asbestos in their products. They attribute their decision to stop selling talc-based baby powder to decreases in demand caused by what they call "misinformation" about their product's safety.
